Presentation of the “ConstitutiON” information campaign
On 22 January 2016, the Day of Unity of Ukraine, at 12:00 at #Mediahub (4/6 Suvorova Street), civil society organizations announce launch of a large-scale public discussion of constitutional amendments and kick-start of a nationwide info-campaign for protection of the Constitution.
Since its adoption, the Constitution of Ukraine has remained rather a formal attribute of statehood than a really effective document and a value for each citizen. Now, more than ever, there is an urgent need for changing this status quo.
Proactive civil society is beginning to recognize the importance of the Constitution and is actively involved in the process of implementing change.
Ukraine needs a balance of powers, decentralization of governance and reform of the judiciary, as well as improvement of Constitutional safeguards (reform of the Constitutional Court). To this end, the Centre of Policy and Legal Reform and the Reanimation Package of Reforms launch the “ConstitutiON” information campaign. The campaign is aimed at improving the public perception and respect for the Constitution, increasing the public awareness about the essence of the Main Law and socially indispensable constitutional changes which shall promote the adherence to the Constitution by public authorities. The campaign is called to persuade the citizens that the Constitution is not a declaration or a political deal, but a social contract between all of us. These are the rules for a society in which we want to live. There should be no place in government for any politician, violating this Constitutional social contract.
