Meanwhile, at Ukraine’s urgent request, the UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on January 12 at 22:00 Kyiv time to discuss Russian attacks, including the use of the “Oreshnik” medium-range ballistic missile.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha elaborated that the meeting will address Russia’s gross violations of the UN Charter.

“We urge Security Council members to demonstrate unity of purpose by demanding an end to the aggression, protection of civilians, and unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty,” Sybiha wrote on X.

Sybiha emphasized that the Russian attacks undermine international security and the peace efforts of the United States, European nations, and other partners. He added that the international community must act immediately to ensure accountability, increase pressure on the aggressor, and restore a lasting peace.

Sybiha noted that the Russian strike with the “Oreshnik” missile on the Lviv Oblast, near the borders of the EU and NATO, constitutes a threat to European security and requires a tough response from partners.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his evening address, has vowed a “tangible” response to the Kremlin’s attempts to undermine Ukraine’s relations with its partners. He also noted movement in the U.S. Congress toward tougher sanctions on Russia.

“We are closely monitoring and taking note of every attempt by the Russians to undermine our relations with our partners. We see which lobbyists Moscow is bringing in, who it is trying to act through, and what internal operations in Ukraine and Europe it is trying to launch. Our countermeasures will be tangible through the special services, our intelligence agencies, political cooperation with our partners, and, in particular, sanctions. It is essential that momentum in the U.S. Congress for tougher sanctions against Russia, particularly on Russian oil, has regained traction. This can really work,” the President stated.
