Kostiantynivka is 80% destroyed, yet residents remain — as of September, approximately 6,000 people still reside in the city.

They mostly lack access to communication, food, and medical aid. Russian forces hunt those trying to help civilians using drones, but evacuations continue.

Police officers traveling to Kostiantynivka manage to retrieve not only the living but also those killed by Russian shelling in their hometown.

“They risk their lives so that families can say goodbye to their loved ones and bury them,” the department stated regarding the crew’s work.

During one of the recent missions, two bodies were recovered: a man killed by a Russian strike in the courtyard of his home, and a female pensioner who died of cold in a semi-destroyed house without medical assistance.

In total, over nearly four years, police officers have managed to evacuate 257 bodies from various settlements in the region.

The police did not specify the ages of the deceased, but from the video released by the officers, it is clear that they were older people, who the full-scale war affects differently than other citizens.

In Kostiantynivka, the last hospital was forced to close several months ago, and news of deaths due to a lack of assistance has appeared since then. Due to a lack of necessary treatment, at least 3,000 Ukrainians with chronic diseases may have died in total.

The Donetsk Oblast is one of the areas most affected by the full-scale war. Since 2022, Russian shelling has killed over 3,600 people here and wounded over 8,300. These data are incomplete because the exact casualty figures from Mariupol, Volnovakha, and other places under Russian occupation are unknown.

Previously, ZMINA reported that during the incomplete current year, the number of victims of Russian shelling in Ukraine has increased nearly fourfold, according to the data of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The full-scale Russian invasion remains the deadliest conflict in the world; among those killed in interstate conflicts globally, 59% are victims of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

By way of background, Ukrainian experts point out that ChinaNorth KoreaIran, and Brazil assist Moscow in killing citizens of Ukraine in Russia’s war, including funding the Russian budget through trade.
