Russian drone strikes passenger bus in Kherson, killing municipal ecologist (updated)

Russian forces killed one person and wounded eight others in a drone attack on a passenger bus in Kherson’s Korabel district on January 6, 2025, according to Roman Mrochko,  head of the Kherson City Military Administration.

The bus was operating on Route 3 when the strike occurred. The attack wounded six individuals who were taken to hospital – five women, ages 47, 55, 58, 51 and 30, as well as the 66-year-old driver.

Later, local authorities reported that a 21-year-old man arrived at the hospital with a blast injury and shrapnel wounds. The attack claimed the life of a 50-year-old man.

Mrochko also reported that a 34-year-old man was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a blast injury, a concussion and a leg injury. After receiving medical care, the man was released for outpatient treatment.

In this attack Russians killed Volodymyr Ivanovych Shum, 50, a specialist from the Department of Ecology at the Kherson City Council.

“The Russian terrorists killed the only ecologist who was physically working in Kherson hromadaі these days,” Mrochko said.

By way of background, on January 5, Russians killed a man and injured another civilian in their attack on the village of Antonivka, a suburb of Kherson.

Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Oblast Military Administration, reported that the man died in hospital. Doctors fought to save his life until the end, but his injuries were too severe.

The prosecutor’s office reported that Russians attacked the village of Odradokamianka in the Beryslav district at about 06:00 a.m.

The Kherson Oblast Military Administration reported that the attack wounded three men in the city of Kherson: a 34-year-old sustained shrapnel wounds to both legs, a 49-year-old received an explosive injury and concussion, and a 74-year-old suffered shrapnel wounds to his foot. In Kindiika, the attack injured a 69-year-old woman who sustained leg wounds.

The injured were taken to hospital.

At around 13:00 that day, the Russians attacked Antonivka with a drone. The strike wounded a 67-year-old man near his house, causing explosive injuries and shrapnel wounds to both legs.

Moreover, Russian forces attacked Kherson’s Dniprovskyi district on January 1, killing one man and injuring two women, according to the Kherson Oblast Military Administration, Oleksandr Prokudin and Roman Mrochko

As a result of the enemy attack, a 46-year-old woman who was in the building sustained a blast injury, concussion and shrapnel wounds to her limbs. Local authorities reported that Russian forces once again attacked Kherson’s Dniprovskyi district at around 10:00. A 76-year-old woman sustained blast injuries, concussion, and shrapnel wounds to her leg in the artillery attack. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition.  

Later, local authorities confirmed that a Kherson volunteer who was constantly helping to rebuild the community sustained fatal injuries as a result of a Russian strike on Kherson’s Dniprovskyi district.

At around 20:00 on December 31, 2024, Russian troops attacked the Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, injuring a 71-year-old woman. 

A man was also killed in the village of Tiahynka, Beryslav district, Kherson Oblast, when a Russian drone attacked a civilian vehicle on December 29, according to the Kherson Oblast Prosecutor’s Office

Earlier, the National Police of Ukraine reported that Russians killed a woman, 50, and a man, 67, and wounded four others in its UAVs and artillery attacks on the Kherson Oblast on December 12.

The Russian bombardment damaged four houses and three high-rise buildings, seven vehicles, including a police vehicle, agricultural machinery, an administrative building, the premises of a banking institution and a gas pipeline.

 

Previously, Ukraine’s National Resistance Center (NRC) reported that Russians have set up engineering classes in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to teach children to assemble drones for their army’s needs. The Russians have already approved a programme to expand the network of these classes by 2030.

The NRC emphasised that Russians are deliberately violating international law by involving civilians in activities supporting their military. Furthermore, the involvement of minors adds an aggravating factor to these actions.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on social media on January 5 that over the past week, Russia has used more than 630 attack drones, nearly 740 guided aerial bombs, and almost 50 missiles of various types against Ukraine. These weapons contained over 50,000 sanctioned components from around the world.

 

He noted that 8,755 foreign-made components were used in the Shahed drones that attacked Ukraine at night.

“Sanction pressure on supply routes for foreign components is insufficient. Russia continues to receive the components and means of production it needs from almost all over the world and uses them in weapons to terrorize Ukraine,” the president emphasised.

In July, the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise of the Ministry of Justice reported that the missiles and drones that Russia uses for daily attacks on Ukraine contain components manufactured in over 20 countries.

Earlier, Financial Times reported that Russia is constructing ten nuclear power units abroad to meet the growing demand for energy driven by artificial intelligence and emerging markets. Russia is intensifying its efforts to strengthen its global influence by expanding its nuclear fleet, building plants in Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Iran, and Turkey.
