Ukraine can sustain defense for six months without US aid – Finance Minister Marchenko
In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais, Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko asserted that Ukraine possesses sufficient funds and weapons to resist Russian aggression through the first half of 2025, even if US aid were to cease.
When questioned about potential US aid suspension, Marchenko acknowledged the significant challenge such a scenario would pose to Ukraine’s defense capabilities, while emphasizing that it would not lead to an inevitable collapse.
“We must have a plan to create the necessary conditions for cooperation with the new administration. It is in Ukraine’s natural interest to build trust for cooperation. I think this should be a priority strategy both for Ukraine and for Europe,” Marchenko said.
Marchenko highlighted the potential for shifting political dynamics, emphasising Ukraine’s need to strategically utilize available time and prepare for diplomatic engagement with any new US administration.
He noted that Ukraine is currently receiving the necessary weapons from the US.
“This means that we will be well-armed to resist this aggression, at least for the first half of the year and beyond. Ukraine must use this time very wisely to hold the necessary talks with our main allies in the US,” the minister concluded.
Ukraine urges the international community to unite in restoring global security under the UN Charter and strengthening sanctions against Russia to enforce compliance with international law. Following Russia’s initial invasion in 2014, Ukraine has consistently pursued the liberation of its territories within its internationally recognized 1991 borders, aiming to guarantee human rights and restore constitutional order, while developing comprehensive reintegration strategies and policies for all liberated territories.
