On October 24, 2024, Riga, the Third Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform was held in Riga, the capital of Latvia, gathering over 70 delegations, including 36 heads of parliaments, both in-person and online.

The summit participants discussed current challenges related to the occupation of Crimea, human rights violations in the occupied territories, and the international response to Russia’s actions.

Moustadroine Abdou, President of the Union of the Comoros, stated that Ukraine’s fight for justice, fairness, and respect for the law is legitimate and must be effectively supported. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and security in accordance with international law, which has been the foundation of global coexistence since the end of the Second World War.

ZMINA publishes his speech at the Third Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform.

Madam Speaker of the Saeima, Dear Speakers, Dear Ministers, Dear Heads of delegations, Ambassadors and Dear Friends!

At the outset, I would like to thank the authorities of Latvia and in particular the speaker of the Latvian Parliament, the Honourable Dejga Meirina, for convening this third parliamentary summit of the Platform for Crimea here in this beautiful Baltic city of Riga  […].

The holding of this Summit in Riga is undoubtedly an opportunity for Latvia to demonstrate its leadership in strengthening international support for Ukraine. This is why the Parliament of the Union of Comoros, which I represent and of which I am the President, expresses through my voice its full solidarity with the Ukrainian people in their struggle to preserve Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

For my country, the Union of the Comoros, which has not yet regained its full sovereignty, such fights for justice, equity, and respect for the law are legitimate and must be supported effectively.

It just takes us, Ladies and Gentlemen, to look at what is happening today in the Middle East to realise the inhumanity with which some people take an unhealthy and cruel pleasure in violating what we have in common and that we must preserve.

It only takes us, Ladies and Gentlemen, to look at what is happening today in the Middle East to realise the inhumanity with which some people take an unhealthy and cruel pleasure in violating […].

We are dealing with matters of peace and security, in accordance with the international norms that have underpinned our shared existence since the end of the Second World War.

It is also, and above all, the reason the convening of this Summit offers hope of finding peaceful means to restore the rule of law wherever it has been disrupted. This will necessarily occur through the dialogue to which we are committed as fundamental believers.

Yes, dear friends, war will never be the solution to our differences. It will never put an end to our differing views on global issues, nor make our disagreements disappear. Nor is it, and even less so, a solution to our unresolved conflicts, the roots of which are often buried in our millennia-old histories, which are ultimately the benchmarks and seals through which we seek to organise our common life on this planet.

In our changing world, where climate, environmental and security challenges generally make us more vulnerable every day, especially our island states lost in the oceans, we must collectively devote all our efforts so that peace becomes the sole objective of our struggle on Earth and even in space, as scientific progress slowly leads us there.

Thank you!
