ICC launches investigation into crimes in Georgia
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has approved the launch of the investigation into serious crimes during the war in Georgia in 2008.
Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court (ICC) authorised the Prosecutor to proceed with an investigation into murders, forced displacement and persecution, attacks on civilians, destruction of objects and other crimes against humanity and war crimes, reads the statement.
The crimes within the ICC jurisdiction were allegedly committed in and around South Ossetia, Georgia, between July 1 and October 10, 2008.
October 13, 2015, the ICC Prosecutor submitted request asking for authorization from Pre-Trial Chamber I to proceed with an investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity during the war in Georgia. On December 4, 2015, the Chamber received the representations of 6,335 victims on this matter.
