The court hearing in the case of ban on the Mejlis has started in Simferopol, Crimea.

As the Radio Liberty reports, dozens of police officers and firefighters stay near the courthouse. According to chairman of the Kurultai’s central election commission Zair Smedlyaev, the armed men in helmets stay near the courthouse as well.

About thirty people came to support the Mejlis.

The chairman of the Russian State Committee on Interethnic Relations and Deported Citizens of Crimea has not come to the hearing. Mejlis filed a motion on his summoning but the court rejected it.

In early April, chairman of the State Committee Zaur Smirnov stated that his agency would support the prosecution at the upcoming court hearing in the case of prohibition of the activity of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.

In addition, the defense demanded the evidence of establishment of 370 local mejlises but the court also rejected.

As a reminder, the Crimean Supreme Court began consideration of the claim on ban on the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people on March 3.
