Ukrainian Justice Ministry sends Russia request for extradition of Stanislav Klykh
Ukrainian Justice Ministry has sent Russia the request for extradition of Stanislav Klykh, the Ukrainian citizen who was unlawfully imprisoned in the Russian Federation.
This was stated by First Deputy Justice Minister of Ukraine Natalia Sevostyanova.
According to Ukrayinski Novyny (Ukrainian News) agency, Sevostyanova noted that request for Klykh had been sent to the Russian Federation together with the request for extradition of Ukrainian citizen Mykola Karpyuk [last week]. However, Russia has not responded to these requests yet.
“We expect that the issue can be solved at the political level,” Sevostyanova said.
According to Interfax-Ukraine news agency, she stressed that the procedure for return for serving sentence in homeland took much more time than prisoner exchange.
May 19, Chechnya’s Supreme Court sentenced Mykola Karpyuk to 22.5 years, Stanislav Klykh to 20 years in prison for the murder of Russian military personnel and participation in militias during the first Chechen war. The “Memorial” Russian human rights center recognized Klykh and Karpyuk as political prisoners.
June 16, Deputy Justice Minister of Ukraine Serhiy Petukhov stated that the Justice Ministry had sent Russia a request for extradition of Karpyuk to Ukraine.
June 22, lawyer of Ukrainians, Dokka Itslaev, named three possible scenarios of further developments in the case of Karpyuk and Klykh. The first is pardon and exchange, the second is extradition to the Justice Ministry, when the court recognizes the Russian sentence valid and a person is transferred to serve sentence in Ukraine, the third is continuation of legal proceedings in Russia and subsequent appeal to the European Court.
