Russian borders guards refused to let Ukrainian citizen pass in the annexed Crimea and seized his passport when he was crossing the administrative border. The incident occurred on March 1 near the “Chongar” checkpoint.

As reported by the press service of the State Border Service of Ukraine.

“Occupants started interrogation, which lasted more than 15 hours and exerted psychological pressure on him, afterwards they seized his Ukrainian passport. Representatives of the occupying power explained the reason for seizure of the passport document by saying that the document contains signs of forgery and that the passport does not belong to Ukrainian”, – said in a statement.

Ukrainian also presented other documents proving his identity to the Russian border guards, but they did not let him pass to the peninsula and refused to return his passport.

“Currently, border guards of Berdiansk unit in the established order allowed for Ukrainian to pass on the mainland Ukraine”, – said in the Ukrainian border service.

As a reminder, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has officially announced the February 20, 2014, as the beginning of the temporary occupation of the Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation. On October 7, 2015, Petro Poroshenko, the President of Ukraine, signed the corresponding law. Key international organizations, including the UN General Assembly, condemned Russia’s actions and called the occupation and annexation of Crimea as illegal. Economic sanctions were imposed against the Russian Federation. Russia denies the occupation of the peninsula and calls it a “restoration of historical justice”.
